Some modern sackbut reproductions use glue as a compromise to give a loose fitting for high resonance without risk of falling apart. Tuning slides came in during the very late 18th century. Early trombonists adjusted pitch with the slide, and by adding variously shaped and sized crooks. It began by exploring what makes a “good” mouthpiece and what a trombonist can reasonably expect from one, continued by detailing how different elements of design contribute to function, presented a method for systematically evaluating different designs, and most recently, discussed what’s involved in switching mouthpieces.

Just as Johann Gottfried Reiche’s original instrument, shown in the Haussmann’s original painting below, Steuart’s La Tromba model, has no valves, no keys, no slides, and certainly no “hinden” anmd completely unauthentic intonation-holes of any kind!

Greatly inspired by both the mystery behind the famous Elias Gottlob Haussmann portrait of Reiche and by Bach’s works, written specifically for Reiche, to be specifically played on his special “Clarino” Trumpet, Mr. Steuart sincerely believes he has finally re-created Reiche’s original instrument and mouthpiece AND at the same time rediscovered his very special playing technique! June 17, Photo Credit: This will not be an entertaining document. Most of us are trumpet players and the thought of playing a cornet sometimes turns us off. How this idea ever got started is a wonder to many of us. If I were a craftsman and needed to remove a nail from a board, I would choose a claw hammer. If I needed to hammer out some sheet metal, I would select a ball penne hammer. Making the selection between a trumpet and a cornet should be made for the same reason.

Oh the things I promised my parents to get them to purchase this trombone for me its something I will never forget, and actually a memory I still recall when I have young students come into my shop to purchase a new trombone with their parents.

I got into college on this trombone and played some of my most memorable performances in my young career on it. I sold this trombone in in order to fund my first Conn 88H after I fell in love with the Conn sound. It’s been well loved since then, serving its second owner well, who recently traded it in here at The Brass Ark to get something newer. So again, for the second time in my life, I offer my original professional trombone for sale.
