Asa Gilbert Eddy m. Her father, Mark Baker, was a deeply religious man, although, according to one account, “Christianity to him was warfare against sin, not a religion of human brotherhood. Eddy or “our beloved Leader”—was still included in all articles published in the Christian Science journals. She stood before us, seemingly slight, graceful of carriage, and exquisitely beautiful even to critical eyes. Then, still standing, she faced her class as one who knew herself to be a teacher by divine right. She turned to the student at the end of the first row of seats and took direct mental cognizance of this one, plainly knocked at the door of this individual consciousness. This continued until each member of the class had received the same mental cognizance. No audible word voiced the purely mental contact. Lulu Blackman student of Eddy’s , It was in part because of her unusual personality that Christian Science flourished, despite the numerous disputes she initiated among her followers. Have you been on a guided tour around a cathedral and felt you were being shown around a museum with little reference to Christianity? Christianity Tours are different, these are specialist tours that explore churches and cathedrals from a Christian perspective. My Christianity tours concentrate on the Christian symbolism of the buildings and on relating the church or cathedral to the development of Christianity in Great Britain.

Hillsong is a thoroughly modern free church that started in NZ and has since spread to Australia, London and Ukraine. There are lots of sermons that contain self help stuff — lots of positive motivational stuff for teenage kids that need direction. It does focus quite a bit on self — ie what can god do for me. Many Christians, including Tim Costello the brother of Hillsong conference addressee and Federal Treasurer Peter Costello as well as those from the Assemblies of God in Australia, oppose this teaching as being unbiblical and heterodox.
I found this statement about Hillsong Church an unfair thing to print which is not here to defend itself, but after 2 years of attending Hillsongs Church and seeing the good but also hearing and to some degree — experiencing some reservations, I felt compelled to explore my own feelings and try to work out why people and occasionally I had these negative thoughts.
Are they the spirit of truth pervading my thoughts or are they the inevitable doubts of a jaded believer that has encountered the works of God in a strong way? The question is — was he talking about life on earth, or the afterlife — or perhaps were expected to be happy with our lot — live from day to day and some will be poor and some will be rich — ie we are not to be in the pursuit of money and must accept that some will be given riches and some not.
Imagine if all believers became rich on earth. Being poor does not mean you are not blessed. Some of the poorest people on earth are the most blessed and vice versa. But God only requires the minimum donation of our love does he not according to the Bible — or is he happier when we give up our money too? All I needed was a little reasurance that the money was going to be used in ways that Christ would have endorsed.

The injustice is this: It takes a village, but there are no villages. In the absence of the village… Enormous pressure is put on parents as we try to make up for what entire communities used to provide. Our priorities become distorted and unclear as we attempt to meet so many conflicting needs at once. We feel less safe and more anxious without the known boundaries, expectations and support of a well-known group of people with whom to grow.
We tend to hold tight to our ideals and parenting paradigms, even when doing so divides us, in an attempt to feel safer and less overwhelmed by so many ways and options. We rely heavily on social media for a sense of connection, which often leads us to feel even more isolated and inadequate. Our partnerships are heavily burdened by the needs that used to be spread among communities, and our expectations of loved ones increase to unrealistic levels.
We feel frequently judged and misunderstood.
